Description
Pre-Columbian Mapuche Stone Ceremonial Clava Scepter from Argentina ot Chile, ca. 1200-1700 CE. A hand-carved ceremonial scepter known as a clava, composed of heavy dark-colored stone. The profile resembles the extremely abstract head of a parrot or macaw. The thick handle extends downward and then gradually expands to form a pommel. A pair of circular eyes in low relief are located in the middle, while the upper and lower tip resembles the beak of the bird and is carved with a star pattern. Mapuche shamans displayed their might and rank by holding scepters like the one in this image by their handles. Stand included. 9 7/8" H.
