Description
Rossiya: A Diamond and Demantoid Garnet-Set Gold-Mounted White Jade Box Indistinctly marked, St. Petersburg, 1899-1908, the medallion signed A. Rives, with French import mark 1-3/8 x 2-3/8 inches (3.5 x 6.0 cm) 106 grams (gross) PROVENANCE: A La Vieille Russie; Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, June 8-9, 1978, lot 186; Ruth S. Nelkin acquired this work for $1600. This box with indistinct hallmarks is unusual both for its quality and its material. While Russian objects in rock crystal are relatively common, this small box or bonbonniere in white jade stands out for the exquisite translucent rendering of the material. The patriotic medallion featuring an allegorical representation of Russia suggests the piece may have been executed around the time of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, when such representations were ubiquitous.
