Cotton Mather Autograph Quotation from the Book of Job
AM
A superb Mather manuscript quote (unsigned), being one line of text from the Book of Job in the King James version of the Bible. Penned in a tiny precise hand on a 6" x 1.33" sheet, no place or date it reads, in full: ?Job 22.28 Thou shalt decree a thing, & it shall be established unto thee & the light shall shine upon thy ways.? On verso is an excerpt, likely from a sermon and worthy of further research. Evenly toned and near fine condition, ideal for display.
Accompanied by late nineteenth - early twentieth century letter of provenance signed ?JEH,? stating that this quotation was ??cut from a sermon of John Cotton Mather, known to be genuine given to [?] by Mr. Alexander??.
Cotton Mather (1663 ? 1728) was a prominent New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. He left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention, though he is most frequently remembered today for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
