Archive

[KENTUCKY.] Archive of documents related to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, 1804-1952. 69 documents, 153 pp., various sizes. Housed in four-ring binder, 10.5" x 14.5". Expected folds; several separations on folds repaired with cellophane tape; general toning; generally, very good.

These documents, largely from the nineteenth century, come from Muhlenberg County in western Kentucky. Muhlenberg County, formed in 1798, was bordered on the northeast by the Green River and Ohio County.

Among the antebellum documents are various bonds for local officials, tavern and ferry keepers, and owners of fish dams; deeds to lands in the county; reports on roads; commissioners' reports on bridges; and various documents related to the settlements of estates, including inventories and accounts. Late nineteenth and early twentieth-century documents include insurance policies, bonds paid by the county of Muhlenberg, and an issue of an American Red Cross newspaper from France in 1919, all with ties to Muhlenberg County.

Charles Fox Wing (1780-1861) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of a shipbuilder. He moved to Kentucky with his family around 1790. Wing became the Muhlenberg County Clerk in 1799 and clerk of the circuit court when it was established in 1803. He married Anna Steel "Nancy" Campbell (1788-1863), a daughter of Colonel William Campbell (1759-1800), in 1806, and they had eight children. Wing continued to serve as clerk of both courts until 1850, when the offices were divided and became elective. He was elected circuit clerk, and his son was elected county clerk.
