A signed first day cover by Sergeant Alvin York. Measuring 6.5" x 3.5", postmarked New York, dated November 17, 1961. A John J. Pershing first day cover with a Pershing stamp. Signed "Sgt Alvin C. York" in blue ink. The cover has been mounted to a sheet of paper with two photographs: a portrait of York on the front and an image of a serviceman at an exhibit dedicated to York on the back. The cover has minor soiling and bumped corners. Large and bold signature.
Alvin Cullum York (1887-1964) was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War I and is considered one of the U.S. Army's most decorated soldiers; he received a Medal of Honor during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France as well as numerous decorations from several allied countries including France, Italy, and Montenegro. In 1941, a movie about his war exploits was produced entitled "Sergeant York" and became the year's highest-grossing film.
