A trio of poster-sized photogravures of thoroughbred racing horses by Canadian artist Henry Stull. Varying size, the smallest being 34.25" x 27" and the largest being 42.25" x 33". Dating from 1890 to 1891. The group have varying degrees of light soiling, foxing, toning, and staining - mostly kept towards the edges of the pieces. Minor edge and corner wear. 1. Horse Salvator. Measuring 42.25" x 33", black and white. Printed and published December 1, 1890 by Boussod Valadon and Co. Editors successors to Goupi and Co. Paris, London, The Hague. Salvator was a dark chestnut with a large white blaze born in 1886. An American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse, he was considered by many to be one of the best racers during the latter half of the 19th century.
2. Horse Firenze. Measuring 34.25" x 27", black and white. Printed and published December 1, 1890 by Boussod Valadon and Co. Editors successors to Goupi and Co. Paris, London, The Hague. Firenze was a bay filly born in 1884. During her six-year racing career, she won 47 of 82 starts and retired as the second-highest money-earning filly in American history.
3. Horse Tournament. Measuring 34.25" x 27.25", color. Printed and published July 1, 1891 by Boussod Valadon and Co. Editors successors to Goupi and Co. Paris, London, The Hague. Tournament was born in 1887 and was raced by George Hearst, a wealthy businessman, U. S. senator, and father of William Randolph Hearst. He was considered the best 3-year-old male of the 1890s.

Henry Stull (1851-1913) ss generally considered to be one of two major nineteenth-century painters of thoroughbred racehorses in America. Born in Ontario, Canada, he was exposed to horses through his father, who was a horse-drawn hack driver. He moved to New York City in 1873 in the hopes of becoming an actor, but turned to illustration when his acting career did not materialize. He started at Leslie's Weekly drawing cartoons and caricatures, but found success with his sketches made while attending horse races. His first paintings were first published in Harper's Weekly on August 18, 1883. From 1879 to 1912, Stull painted horses in nearly every year, of which more than 110 survive today.
