Item Details
Description
John Webster’s stitched needlework wallet dated 1868. (Note the backward “s” in Webster!) Deep red background with white and black decorations. John’s name and the date are stitched in white. Silk edging and silk interior. Probably stitched by John’s wife or daughter, the purse/wallet is in remarkably fine condition, especially for something that was meant to be handled every day. There are no missing stitches, holes, tears, etc in the needlework, and the silk edging only shows very minor wear. There is expected wear/thinning on the silk liner, but when the purse is closed, the defects are not noticeable. 4 ½” x 3 ½”. I have seen/handled flame stitch purses from the late 18th-early 19th centuries, but this is the first man’s needlework wallet I have seen.
