About the artist: Ukrainian painter and teacher. People's Artist of Ukraine, professor.
Vasily Ivanovich Zabashta was born on July 11, 1918 in the village of Babenkovo, Izyumsky district, Kharkov region. He was the youngest of eleven children in the family. His father came from a well-known Chumak family, which the writer and ethnographer Grigory Danilevsky recalls in his work "Life and customs of the Ukrainian Chumaks" (1857).
From 1937 to 1938 he studied in the fine arts circle of the artist Vladimir Yakovenko.
In the summer of 1938, Vasily got acquainted with plein air painting, which he studied with the Kharkov artist Viktor Savin.
In 1938 Zabashta entered the Kharkov Art School. His mentors were K. Gripich, A. Golovashov (student of V. Serov), V. Kasiyan. While still a freshman, Vasily becomes the winner of the competition for creative student works.
In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army and sent to the war with Finland as a radio operator. After being seriously wounded, he spent a long time in hospitals and returned home in May 1941.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the artist volunteered for the front. For valor and courage he was awarded the Orders of Glory II and III degrees, medals.
In August 1945, Vasily received a vacation during which he took exams in painting and composition at the Kharkov Art Institute. There is no time left to surrender others. Zabashta returned to his unit, but soon received a notice of his admission to the second year of the painting faculty of the Kharkov Art Institute.
In 1947 V.I. Zabashta decides to continue his studies at the Kiev Art Institute in the historical battle workshop of K.D. Trokhimenko. His teacher in the specialty was G. Melikhov.
Since 1951 - a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine.
After graduating from the institute in 1951, the artist enters graduate school. Head - V. Kostetsky.
Works in the field of easel painting. Author of thematic paintings, landscapes, still lifes, portraits.
Participant of art exhibitions: since 1949 - republican, since 1954 - all-Union, since 1955 - foreign.
From 1952 to 1976 - the permanent head of the art studio at the October Palace of Culture.
From November 1956 to April 1957 Zabashta V.I. was in China as part of the first creative group of Soviet artists. I tried to transfer everything I saw and experienced on canvas and paper. The group reporting exhibition "One Hundred Days in China", which presented a series of his paintings and graphic works, was a success in Moscow and Kiev.
In 1957, the artist's first personal exhibition was held.
IN AND. Zabashta devotes a lot of effort to protecting the cultural heritage of Ukraine. He is active in the Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (1978-1990).
In 1979 he received the title of Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR.
For more than fifty years, the creative and pedagogical activity of Vasily Ivanovich Zabashta is associated with the Kiev Art Institute - now the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. Student, post-graduate student, since 1952 - teacher, since 1962 - associate professor, from 1972 to 1978 held the post of dean of the faculties of painting, graphics and sculpture, from 1980 - professor, from 1993 to 2008 - head of the landscape workshop.
Since 1991 - a member of the People's Movement of Ukraine.
Since 1999 - People's Artist of Ukraine.
In 1999, a personal exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of V. I. Zabashta "Teacher and scholars"
Vasily Ivanovich wrote a book of memoirs "Shlyakh to creativity", consisting of three parts - "Angel on the rowing", "My readers and friends", "Creative work"
The artist's works are presented in the collections of Ukrainian museums and adorn private collections in Ukraine, the USA, Canada, France, Italy, Korea, China.
