Description
An antique Japanese Satsuma pottery serving plate or charger. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Round shape with high rims. Hand-painted multi-figure scene of Japanese women in garden scenery. Elaborate ornamental gilding. Fine detail work. Shimazu family crest and Kanji makers mark on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Shimazu clan was the main producer of Satsuma ware. Kusunoki Masashige, 1294 to 1336, was a Japanese samurai of the Kamakura period remembered as the ideal loyal samurai.
