Description

The painting has been held in the collection of the consignor's family since it was composed and depicts their distant ancestor. The first member of the Clarke family to arrive in to the Colonies was Joseph Clarke of Suffolk, England, who emigrated to Rhode Island in approximately 1637. He was an original member of the First Baptist church of Newport and is named on the charter granted to Rhode Island by King Charles II.
