Soldier and painter. From a wealthy bourgeois family, he was born in the French city of Montpelier, where his father was working as a doctor at the University. The family's return to Spain meant that Cusachs' childhood was spent between Barcelona and Mataró, a town where they owned a house and a rustic farm in Batlleix. With no military background in the family, at the age of fourteen his vocation directed him towards a career in arms and he entered the Artillery Academy of Segovia as a cadet, a center where he was able to early show his skills as a draftsman, by collaborating in the magazine humorous El Borceguí, made by the cadets. After completing his military training in Segovia as an artillery lieutenant (1871), his first posting in Barcelona brought him witness to the city's industrial and commercial boom, as well as experiencing the political effervescence that arose after the assassination of General Prim (1870).
