Theora Hamblett (1895-1977) "Two Girls Roller Skating" 1968, Oil on Canvas Painting, signed and dated lower right, "T. Hamblett 68." The painting measures 16" X 20" and is framed in a Circa 1900 oak and gesso frame painted to match the painting, 19" X 25". Theora was born in Paris, Mississippi January 15, 1895. Her father Samuel was a Civil War veteran, who was 72 years old when Theora was born. Hamblett painted from an early age, but in 1955 became serious about painting. One of her early works "The Vision" was exhibited in New York at The Museum of Modern art in 1955. Provenance; Dr Larry Ray, Professor of Art Lambuth University, Jackson Tennessee. Dr. Ray hosted a February 1968 exhibit of Theora's works at Lambuth and purchased this painting from her. The exhibit is listed on page 13 of "Theora Hamblett Paintings" University of Mississippi Press 1975. Hamblett's paintings have been part of some of the most prominent collections in the world including The Nelson Rockefeller Collection, Sir Alex Guiness, Chase Manhattan Bank, United States Embassies, Betty Parsons Gallery, Lee and Pup McCarty and others. Theora Hamblett's paintings are exhibited at The Morris Museum of Art and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The University of Mississippi Museum maintains Hamblett's archive, including six hundred of her paintings. Her works have been exhibited at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The American Visionary Museum, The Walter Anderson Museum of Art, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Mississippi Museum of Art and Lauren Rogers Museum.
