Description
19th Century Staffordshire porcelain recumbent greyhound dog figurine, with a hand-painted beige coat and reddish brown stripe down the middle of its head and back, believed to be manufactured sometime in the 1880’s in Staffordshire, England. This example slightly larger than others at 5 3/4" length X 1 1/2" W X 1 1/2" H. Staffordshire has been the center of production of ceramics since the early 17th century, and their famous dog figurines are still sought after today. Staffordshire’s coveted canine figurines could be found decorating most English homes in the Victorian era and were especially a hit amongst royalty, most notably the Spaniel figurines which attributed to royalty favoring the King Charles Spaniel breed. Staffordshire produced many figurines of various dog breeds, including greyhounds like this adorable figurine.
