Text in French
Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (also called Bernardin de St. Pierre) (19 January 1737, in Le Havre – 21 January 1814, in Éragny, Val-d'Oise) was a French writer and botanist.
He is best known for his 1788 novel Paul et Virginie, now largely forgotten, but in the 19th century a very popular children's book
"The Études de La Nature revealed in Bernardin de Saint-Pierre a strength of talent and genius that one would not have suspected from him. It was, from a moral and literary point of view, a new concept which was reminiscent of Rousseau's principles and eloquence: the same independence of thought, the same taste for the paradoxical, the same stylistic drive, the same strength of persuasion." (Michaud).
