Item Details
Description
Antique original first issue of the Brown Maybelline Cake Mascara (1917-early 1920s) unused and complete with its original components including paper instructions insert. While all components are authentic 1917 issue, the brush is marked "Japan Mascara" which indicates early 1920s.
The cardboard box [3" x 1.1/4" / 76mm x 34mm] has a paper hinge and a gold cardboard framed glass mirror. This glass mirror is aged dark and only casts a shadow of reflection, but it is intact. The green translucent handled brush has mark "Japan Maybelline." The Maybelline cake is a little damaged- has crease, but appears unused. The fold-out instructions sheet is inserted in the box. Overall, very good condition.
The Maybelline Company was founded in Chicago by pharmacist Thomas Lyle Williams in 1915. Williams noticed his older sister Mabel applying a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it with a chemistry set and produced a product sold locally called Lash-Brow-Ine. Williams renamed his eye beautifier Maybelline in her honor. In 1917, the company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara, "the first modern eye cosmetic for everyday use."
