Description
[MEDALLION]. [WELLESLEY, Arthur, First Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), subject]. British Victories in Portugal, Spain & France, 1808 to 1815. [Ca. 1816]. Rare medallion case with 12 loose and 2 affixed printed paper discs, commemorating 26 British Napoleonic-era military victories. Loose paper discs printed on both sides. Discs approximately 1 ½” in diameter. Housed in original gilt-finished copper medallion in two parts, one side with Wellington in profile and captioned “Duke of Wellington”; the other side with the following inscription surrounded by a laurel wreath: “By his consummate skill as a general he has raised the British Army to the highest excellence & himself the most noble & exalted hero in the annals of history.” Approximately 1 ¾” in diameter. Some minor occasional tarnishing to medallion, some toning to discs. Fine. A rare and unusual item.
