In her Mary Beale exhibition catalogue at the Geffrye Museum (1999, p.53) Tabitha Barber quotes from Charles Beale's account books which describes the stretcher as having ‘half lapped corner joints nailed together with 3 conical headed nails. The bars have rounded edges but no distinct bevel’. See the photograph of the reverse of our painting for a similar construction.
