LATE 19TH CENTURY
the white dial with Roman numerals and moon hands, signed 'Charpentier & Cie, Bronziers, Rue Charlot 8, Paris', the square case flanked by two reclining patinated bronze figures of King Edward III and his son the Black Prince after Félix Maurice Charpentier (French 1858-1924), modelled as warriors in heraldic tunics and armour, set on a large black marble rectangular plinth base with gilt bronze moulding and bracket feet, the signed brass twin-train movement striking on a bell, with a pair of figural candlesticks en suite, with figures of knights in fleur-de-lys heraldic tunics and armour on hexagonal bases, holding aloft a large weapon trophy, surmounted by a lion mask helmet with single candle nozzle (3)
the clock 75cm wide, 46cm high, 20cm high deep; the garnitures 86cm high, 24cm diameter
Note: The firm of Charpentier & Cie was located at 8, rue Charlot (presumably next door to Paul Sormani) in Paris from 1860. From circa 1870 - 1890 they merged with Lemerle and exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Félix Maurice Charpentier (French 1858-1924) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, then worked in the studios of Jules Cavelier and Amédée Doublemard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After 1879 he exhibited at the Salon des Artists Francais.
