This is a rare watch by a rare watch company. This unique watch is in exceptional original condition and has been in a vault for nearly 50 years. The purchase price includes a factory quality service by our finest watchmaker. Remarkably, it is still fitted with what appears to be an original strap and buckle as well. The strap is dried out though and you will not be able to use it. We have photographed it with the original strap and a new genuine lizard strap we had made for the watch in Italy.
Hampden was an American house based in Canton Ohio and produced high grade watches for the railroad industry and for the general marketplace as well. This watch is an example of one of their classic designs done as a tonneau shape. The tonneau, or barrel shaped watch was first created by Louis Cartier in France around 1914. Cartier was one of the first designers to "stylize" basic things around him. He looked at them and re-interpreted them by exaggeration, extension and stylization. He saw barrels on the docks in Marseille and realized it would be a perfect shape for a watch. Hence, the name tonneau (French for barrel). The Tortue (meaning Tortoise), an original design by Louis Cartier, was based on Tortoises he saw holding up columns in a Greek Temple that was 3000 years old. Since then, the Tortue design is considered a staple in the Cartier line to this day.
In 1930, the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company sold its factory and assets to the Soviet Union. The sale was part of a larger effort by the Soviet Union to acquire American industrial technology. The Dueber-Hampden Watch Company was one of the leading watch manufacturers in the United States, and its technology was considered to be among the most advanced in the world. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union gave the Soviet Union access to this technology, which it could use to improve its own watchmaking industry.
The sale of the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company to the Soviet Union was controversial at the time. Some people argued that it was a mistake to sell such a valuable asset to a foreign country. Others argued that the sale was necessary to help the Soviet Union improve its own watchmaking industry. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union had a significant impact on the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company. The company eventually went out of business, and its employees were laid off. The sale of the factory and assets to the Soviet Union also had a significant impact on the American watchmaking industry. The Soviet Unions acquisition of American technology helped it to improve its own watchmaking industry, and this competition from the Soviet Union made it more difficult for American watchmakers to compete.
