In Bamberg, Friedrich Forner served as an auxiliary bishop and vicar general from approximately 1568 to 1630. In addition to being regarded as "the soul of the Counter-Reformation," he persisted in being a witch hunter in the Bamberg Bishopric. The 1626 essay "Panoplia Armaturae Dei" by Friedrich Forner, a key architect of the Catholic Reformation in Bamberg, is a work of particular note. When one reads Forner's texts in their entirety, a unifying logic emerges that guides his handling of the issues surrounding Catholic reform and witch-hunting. Historically speaking, the advent of both witchcraft and Calvinism signaled the end of the devil's campaign against Christianity. After the Calvinist heresy was defeated in the early Thirty Years' War, the devil became desperate and used witches as a last-ditch attempt to attack the Catholic faith. The intellectual foundation for the last campaign against witchcraft, which resulted in the trials of the 1620s and 1630s, came from Förner's reconstruction of church history.
