"Cupid Received by Anacreon" Bas-Relief Sculpture, Inspired by Thorvaldsen - (30.8lbs)
A finely detailed sculpted wall bas-relief, once part of Lord Norton's collection at Hams Hall, Warwickshire, and auctioned by Spink and Son in 1926, presents "Cupid and Bacchus" and "Cupid Received by Anacreon." Originating from Bertel Thorvaldsen's meticulous work spanning over twenty-three years, including "Cupid and Bacchus" (possibly crafted in Rome around 1810) and "Cupid Received by Anacreon" (with its original plaster model dating back to Rome in 1823). The latter composition uniquely features a concave semi-circle background, contrasting with the square backgrounds of other reliefs. These mythological depictions draw from the writings of the Ionian poet Anacreon, illustrating his encounter with Cupid amidst a storm and his interaction with Bacchus, offering wine to the youthful deity. Thorvaldsen's departure from Rome in 1838 led him to establish a workshop in Denmark, with the Thorvaldsen Museum later housing his extensive collection, including plaster models of all four reliefs. Reflecting the artist's vision, these reliefs gracefully transform Carrara marble into serene, rhythmic forms, embodying elegance and harmony. Dimensions
