Description
"The Golden Treasury of Myths and Legends Adapted from the World's Great Classics" by Anne Terry White, illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen, A Giant Golden Book De Luxe Edition, published by Golden Press; First Edition, stated 10th printing 1970 [1st printing was issued in 1959].

Color decorated hard boards, large: 8.1/4" x 11.1/4"; decorated endpapers, private exlibris on the title page [see photo]; 164 pages on heavy high quality paper, Index is imprinted on verso of the back endpaper, clean [what appear as soiling on photos is a part of the illustrations], very good condition.

Excellent retelling of an assortment of Greek myths plus 5 stories from other cultures (Beowulf, Tristram and Iseult, Sigurd of the Volsungs, the Battle of Roncevaux, and Rustem and Sohrab).

"The stories make more sense here than in other versions I've read. I think it's because each story is self-contained, with a beginning and an end, and if there are characters that are also in other stories, there's no assumption that you've already read them and know who they are. For example, in The Golden Fleece, there's a little paragraph about all the heroes who went with Jason on the Argo: "Hero after hero answered the call. Argus himself volunteered to go, he who had built the vessel. Heracles of Tiryns, the strongest man who ever lived, joined Jason. Laertes, grandson of Zeus, who one day would be father of Odysseus of the many adventures, came from Argos. Orpheus, the poet and wondrous musician who descended into Hades to seek his dead wife, Eurydice, hastened from Thrace. Peleus, who would one day father Achilles, the great hero of the Trojan War, also came. And many others of glittering fame hastened to Iolcus, so that never before had so gallant a ship's company come together." [from a private review]
