Description
An MTV Australia Video Music Awards (the AVMAs, c. 2005-2009) "Platypus" Award presented to musicians Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for "Best Hook Up" for the music video of Timberlake's single, "Sexyback" in 2007.
The MTV Australia Video Music Awards were revealed in 2004, with Australia becoming the seventeeth country to hold their own MTV VMA awards show each year. These exceedingly rare awards can be distinguished from the traditional U.S. version of the "Moonman" VMA awards in that the Australian version is the likeness of a cartoonish platypus figure holding a surfboard. The MTV Australia Video Music Awards had fewer categories than the U.S. VMAs and thus fewer awards distributed (about 8-16 per year), with many of the categories changing from year to year.
This particular award for "Best Hook Up" was only awarded in two of the five years that these events were held in Australia (also as "Best Collaboration/Best Hook-Up" in 2009).
Timberlake's "Sexyback" was a featured single on his second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds (Jive, 2006) and it was the artist's first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 (lasting seven weeks at the top spot). The single also topped the Mainstream Top 40, Hot Digital Songs and Hot Dance Airplay charts and was certified platinum three times by RIAA, winning a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording as well as the People's Choice Award for Favorite R&B Song and Male Artist of the Year at the U.S. MTV Video Music Awards that same year.
