Description
Truth, Sojourner (circa 1797-1883)
I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance, Carte-de-visite.
1864-1865.
Mounted photographic portrait on publisher's card, captioned as above with 1864 copyright statement on verso, from session H, showing Truth seated, holding her knitting, with a vase of flowers at her left elbow; (pale toning, slightly bumped); 2 3/8 x 4 in.
"Truth's favorite seated portrait was likely made around [1864], perhaps by S.C. Wright [of Battlecreek, MI], but probably later, since Sojourner treated this picture as her most satisfactory and reproduced it throughout her life. This was the picture that she chose to incorporate into her Narrative as an engraving [frontispiece portrait]." (Quoted from Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby's Enduring Truths: Sojourner's Shadows and Substance, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2015.)
