His son Michael Pitt-Rivers was put on trail in the 1950s for sodomy, along with Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and Peter Wildeblood. Pitt-Rivers was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. Their case led to the Wolfenden Report, which in 1957 recommended the decriminalisation of homosexuality, which did not come into effect until the Sexual Offences Act of 1967. Carpenter was an early activist for gay rights.
