Description
Circular with a gadrooned border, raised on three bracket feet, the center engraved with heraldic arms. Diameter 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm), approximately 17 ounces.
The arms are those of Ellice impaling Grey, as bourne by Edward Ellice and Lady Hannah Althea Grey, daughter of Charles, 1st Earl of Grey. Ellice and Grey were married in 1809 and this salver could have been part of their wedding silver. After spending time in Canada managing the family fur business, Ellice returned to England and entered politics as member for Coventry. His brother-in-law Charles, 2nd Earl of Grey became Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1830 and Ellice served first as Secretary of the Treasury and then Secretary of War in his government. In 1836 Ellice helped to found London's Reform Club.
