MARCUS & CO.: AN ART NOUVEAU OPAL, SAPPHIRE, ENAMEL, AND DIAMOND PENDANT WATCH AND CHAIN, CIRCA 1906
Set with a pear-shape opal cabochon, framed by the old European-cut diamonds and calibre-cut sapphires, with enamel dial, and enclosing a C.H. Meylan 18-jewel movement, and suspended from a conforming chain with enamel links, signed Marcus & Co. on the watch case and movement, M&CO. for Marcus & Co. on the clasp, the pendant length 2 1/4 in., the chain 20 in.
Footnotes:
Provenance: According to family history, the necklace was purchased by William John Curtis (1854-1927), a prominent New York lawyer and the first president of US Steel Company, for his wife Angeline. It has descended within the family to the consignor.
