David Hockney is a British artist who was born on July 9, 1937, in Bradford, England. He is known for his contributions to the pop art movement and his depictions of Southern California swimming pools, as well as his portraits and landscapes. Hockney studied at the Bradford College of Art before attending the Royal College of Art in London. His early work included paintings that featured gay themes and he became a part of the British pop art scene in the 1960s.Hockney's art is characterized by bright colors and a playfulness that often incorporates elements of humor. In addition to painting, he has also worked in other mediums, such as printmaking and photography. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and he has received numerous honors, including being made a member of the Order of Merit in 2012.Hockney has also been an advocate for new technologies in art, experimenting with iPad drawing and other digital media. He currently divides his time between England and California, and continues to produce new artwork.
