Provenance: Estate of Shelanski Collection, Wynnewood, PA Catalogue note: Shelanski, Morris V., M.D., is life long collector of fine arts and antiques, he was born to European immigrants and grew up in South Philadelphia ,he earned an academic scholarship to Harvard College, then later his M.D. and Master Surgeon degrees from McGill University, while studying biochemistry there he took a humanities course in archeology and ancient civilizations where his passion for classical art was kindled, he went on the medical school, served in the Navy and then work in Pharmaceutical R & D holding several important patents in the field; from the 1950s through the 1970s he acquired many fine objects in his weekend travels to antique shops on Pine street and the surrounding Philadelphia suburbs, he bought with unbridle enthusiasm from classic cars to classical arts, he also bought in quantity ,prominent dealer Phil Bradley once remarked that while on a buying outing to Pine street in the 1960s that he could not buy a single painting because Dr. Shelanski had already bought them all ,the majority of these objects have been in storage for over 40years, may even longer
