Description
Deep Sea,Ca. 1991 and 2008
For the taxidermy collection who thinks he or she has everything, these specimens, each preserved in a tube of liquid, were retrieved from deep sea submergence vehicles in the 1990's. The first specimen, the deep ocean scavenging amphipod (shrimp) Hirondellea Gigas has been found in the deepest depths of the ocean, at 25,000 feet down in the Philippine Trench. The next specimen is Escarpia Spicata, a deep sea methane \ sulfur tube worm found in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico at depths of more than 2,000 feet. It is thought that these species of tubeworm may grow to be older than 250 years old! Lastly a specimen of the hydrothermal vent tubeworm Nicomachean Venticola, this specimen was found at a depth of approximately 2,000 feet.
