Title: Bobo MaskDate/Period: 19th CenturyOrigin: Burkina Faso, AfricaDimension: 10in X 20in X 15inMaterials: WoodAdditional Information: The Bobo live in the eastern part of Burkina Faso. They are farmers who grow cotton, peanuts, maize, millet, and yams. Their lives are regulated by a council of elders and never by a lone chief. The Bobo believe in the god Wuro who formed the earth from a ball of mud. Wuro created Dwo who was responsible for helping mankind. The Bobo live in a region of dry savannah and are dependent on rainfall to have a successful harvest. For this to happen they must purge themselves of evil and re-establish the god-given balance between sun, earth, and rain which is achieved through ceremony. During the rituals, protective animal bush spirits are called upon along with the son of the god Dwo. The Bobo believe that the spirits of animals such as the warthog, antelope, hawk, or serpent are present in the masks that they use. The masks are scary and possess divine power. These bush spirit masks are also worn during ceremonies associated with new crops, initiations, and funerals and will feature white, black, and reddish tints. Our miniature masks represent traditional Bobo design and pigmentation. The price for one mask.
