Description
This is a superb view of Sicily's Messina, its busy harbor and the Strait of Messina with mainland Italy to the left. The walled city is dominated by an imposing fort. The active Mt. Etna looms in the background. The strait and harbor are full of various ships. Southwest is towards the top. Five points of interests are identified and are in the index. The work is included in Civitatis Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas devoted exclusively to the plans and views of major cities in the world. Printed in six volumes between 1572 and 1617. Latin text on verso.
