Charles Merrill Mount New York (1928 - 1995) Study of an Antique Chair, La' Loredano, Venice, 1948 oil on canvas Unsigned. Authentication verso. Provenance: From the studio of the artist. Biography from Whyte's: Born Sherman Merrill Suchow in Brooklyn, New York in 1928 the artist later changed his name and studied at the Art Students League of New York. He won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1956 and travelled to Europe where he worked in Italy, France, Britain and Ireland. Exhibitions of his work were held in Dublin at the Brown Thomas Gallery in 1961 and Baggot Street Studio in 1966. He returned to the United States in 1969, and worked in New York and Washington, D.C. producing portraits, landscapes and streetscapes in oil, watercolour and charcoal. He was the author of various publications on John Singer Sargent (1955), Gilbert Stuart (1964) and Claude Monet (1966). 17 1/2"H x 15 1/4"W(sight), 22 1/4"H x 20"W(frame)
