An Early Tlingit Portrait Mask c. 1870 carved alder wood, pigments, with ink Heye Foundation number 21/1626; custom metal stand Provenance: The Estate of Morton Sosland (1925 - 2019), Kansas City, MO. Deaccessioned from the Museum of the American Indian in 1968 in an exchange with Larry Frank (1926 - 2006), author and collector. Purchased in 1948 by the Museum of the American Indian (Heye Foundation). Purchased from the Wrangell Institute in 1945 by Susan D. Barrow (1907 - 1988), a teacher at the Wrangell Institute, and her husband Henry D. Barrow (1909 - 1987), a ship captain. Acquired in 1934 by Axel Rasmussen (1886 - 1945), a collector and superintendent of schools in Wrangell and Sitka, Alaska. Collected by the photographers Winter and Pond (Lloyd V.
