An Aztec Stone Figure Mexico, c. 1400-1521 Basalt, carved to depict a goddess seated cross-legged with large hands to abdomen. She is richly attired with a large necklace and pendant and elaborate headdress and coiffure that includes side tresses falling to her shoulders, each with a tasseled medallion at front. Her hair is parted above a beaded forehead band. On her sloping crown are three flowers and two curling devices. Her youthful face is naturalistically rendered. In very good condition. Note: This statue may represent Xochiquetzal, aka Ichpochtli (meaning maiden in ancient Nahuatl), the Aztec goddess of beauty, sexual love, and household arts. Her emblems include flowers and plants. She was the protector of young mothers and the patroness of pregnancy, childbirth, weaving and embroidery.
