Description
A Teotihuacan Mask Mexico, c. 450-650 AD A boldly carved, youthful face with thick parted lips, long oval eyes deeply drilled at corners for inlay. Rectangular ears (one deficient), the proper right with a tubular drilled hole through the lobe. A groove outlining the upper eyelid. Tube-drilled holes at sides of lower jaw area, on the top sides of head and one through middle forehead. Mottled and variegated stone -- predominantly shades of brown with veining, areas of blue-green. In good condition, appropriate for age, origin, medium, and exposure to the elements, particularly earth, water, or fire, over time. Eroded unevenly, some areas desiccated, others still with a glossy smooth surface. A large section of proper left side has a diagonal break from broken area of ear across cheek, through upper nose and forehead, the glued repair visible on the back. Provenance: A Private Collection, Santa Fe, NM, acquired in 2009 The Estate of Thias Freda Bullard, Austin, TX Collected in the 1940s by her father, Fred M. Bullard, while researching the Paricutin volcano in Mexico. Dr. Bullard was Professor of Geology at the University of Texas at Austin, and one of the most respected volcanologists of the world with many publications to his name.
