Description
Phillips, Esther (Russian/American, Western PA., 1902-1983), In The Asylum Baths and Dressing Area for Women, watercolor, 12 x 18 inches, signed in pencil lower right, framed showing both sides of the watercolor 23.5x 29 inches, The daughter of Russian Jews who immigrated to the U.S. in 1905, Ms. Phillips was the second of seven children and grew up in the Lower Hill District. She studied art with the gifted Samuel Rosenberg at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement and painted murals for the Carnegie Institute of Technology cafeteria. She also took classes at the school but never finished. Money was always scarce, and her mother did not encourage her desire to be a full-time artist. In 1933, she painted murals for the budget room of Kaufmann?s department store. While in her mid-30s, she moved to New York City. Provenance: Graham Shearing Collection, Pittsburgh Pa.
