George Jacob Hunzinger (German, American, 1835-1898), American Renaissance Revival highly carved walnut parlor chair, pat. 1869. Carved Swagged Crest with finials, tufted padded back. Scrolled sides, shaped low arms, carved seat rail. Canted incised legs ending in hoof feet connected by turned stretchers. Stamped Hunzinger N.Y. Pat March 30 1869. 44.5 x 29 x 31 inches. A similar chair is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and another in the New York State Museum. Both are illustrated in Barry R. Harwood, The Furniture of George Hunzinger: Invention and Innovation in Nineteenth-Century America, (New York: The Brooklyn Museum of Art, 1997), pp. 77 and 15, respectively. Hunzinger was a pioneer inventor, marketer, protomodernist, and one of the most important American furniture designers of the 19th century. His innovations in design changed the furniture industry.
