FIVE CHINESE SPECTACLES
Chinese, 18th/19th century. One (1) unmarked coin silver (one lens chipped) with angular bridge, circa 1790. One (1) with brass frames and angular bridge, circa 1880. One (1) with angular bridge to the white metal frames, circa 1790. One (1) with brass frames and a decorative finish to the temples, circa 1890. The last with a replaced bridge to the brass frames. All with circular lenses and hinged temples.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
