Native American Nez Perce Cornhusk Bag & Pomo Basket
Item Details
Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Washington / Idaho, Plateau Tribes, Nez Perce, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE; Northern California, Pomo, ca. early 20th century CE. Two basketry and woven items from Pomo and Nez Perce cultures. First, a miniature Pomo basket, crafted in a boat shape through meticulous hand coiling and twining techniques using regional plants such as sedge grass, fern root, willow, and bracken. Once adorned with feathers, now only tufts remain. The other is a cornhusk bag, intricately woven or twined from native hemp, featuring a denim cloth rim and rawhide straps. This unique "Sally bag" boasts a distinctive bucket shape, historically employed for gathering roots, medicinal plants, and seasonal foodstuffs. The flexible baskets required a special full turn twining technique. Size of bag: 8" W x 11.75" H (20.3 cm x 29.8 cm); basket: 4.75" L x 3" W x 1.5" H (12.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
