Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, East Kalimantan, Kenyah Dayak, ca. mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial headdress known as a Ketapu Silung, made from woven rattan in a helmet shape, and embellished with extensive beadwork, and colored goat hair plumes, feathers, sticks, and a cotton cloth rim. Like other Dayak communities, the Kenyah tribe share the practice of headhunting, and the esteemed warriors wore this type of headdress as a status symbol. The hornbill feathers attest to his bravery and vitality, and beaded motif is a deity figure that bestows strength and magical protective attributes upon the wearer. Size: 8" Diameter x 10.5" H (20.3 cm x 26.7 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Small beaded band is reattached with adhesive. Rest of the cap is intact and very good. Some bending to beaded panels. Fraying to feathers. Some tearing to hair tassels, but overall great condition.
