Description
STATE OF NEW YORK - MESSAGE From His Excellency Martin Van Buren to the Legislature, communicating his resignation of the office of Governor of the State of New York

Martin Van Buren's political career took a fascinating turn when Andrew Jackson, impressed by his political skills, appointed him Secretary of State in 1829. Van Buren, a rising star in New York politics, had just been elected Governor. This presented a dilemma: stay put or take the national stage. Choosing ambition, Van Buren resigned as Governor and became Secretary of State. This move solidified his bond with Jackson and positioned him perfectly for the future. He would become Jackson's Vice President and eventually his successor as President in 1837.
