Ernst Seraphim was a son of the Courland lawyer Ferdinand Seraphim (1827–1894) and Helene Tiling († 1870). He attended high school and studied history at the University of Dorpat. After passing the senior teacher examination in 1886, he taught at the German State School in Fellin. After its dissolution, he became publisher and editor (1892[1]) or editor-in-chief of the Düna newspaper (1896–1909) and the Rigaer Tageblatt (1909–1915).In the mid-1890s he became a member or chairman of the Riga local group of the Pan-German Association; Under him, Riga became a center of the pan-German movement within the Russian Empire.[2]During the First World War he was deported to Siberia by Russians. He reported on these years in 1918.[3] He then worked as a press officer for the Baltic Army for a short time.In the fall of 1919 he moved to Königsberg and took over as editor of Eastern issues at the Königsberger Allgemeine Zeitung. He carried out a lively journalistic and scientific activity until the end of his life. After the Battle of Königsberg and the capture of the city by the Red Army, he and his wife Sophie Wegener (1871–1945) starved to death. Some of Seraphim's later writings, which dealt with German-Russian relations, the deportation of Baltic Germans to Siberia and the Red Terror, were not wanted in the Soviet occupation zone and were placed on the list of literature to be discarded.
