Description
Silver gelatin print, " x ", with areas of foxing or discoloration, taped to a mat with "Kiboutz Gvulot 1946 Sandy Desert" captioned in the lower left. Gvulot is in southern Israel, in the northwestern Negev desert. It was established as Mitzpe Gvulot ("Borders Lookout") by the Jewish National Fund and Hashomer Hatzair in 1943, and was a guard station and research outpost before getting recognized as a kibbutz in 1946, when this photograph was taken. Sent from Shoshana and Shimon Alony, who likely took the photograph, to friends in the United States (see note on reverse). The Alonys were founding members of Kubbutz Gvulot, and parents of notable Israeli poet and architect Iftach Alony.
