Biography: 1919 - 2003. Herbert Gentry, Honorary Trustee and friend of The Amistad Foundation and Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, died of a heart attack (2003) at the Wintertullen in Stockholm, Sweden, where he lived for the past three years. Like many disenchanted black artists of the 1940s, Herbert lived abroad, first in Paris then in Stockholm, settling there in the early sixties. Since the eighties he has divided his time between Sweden and New York.Many Amistad Foundation board members may remember Herbert's visits to Hartford, CT for Trustee meetings and various Museum and Amistad events. He is represented in both collections and two of his prints (Carnival, 1984, and The Man, 1993) are currently on view in the Sankofa exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Herbert's work, in its high-key, freewheeling abstraction form best represents the spirit of the man and inspires the memory of him as being "as social as ever," full of cheer, optimistic and on top of the world!
