Fine, Very Rare & Highly Collectable Rolex Explorer ref 5500 is a timeless luxury,
dating from circa 1963
The Rolex reference 5500 has been long admired for its functionality, desirability & power.
Launched in 1957 and would carry various names on the dial but the reference is most often associated with the Air King model. During a small period of time in the 1960s however, Rolex also produced a small number of reference 5500 watches with Explorer dials that were very closely aligned to the classic Explorer Reference 1016. Instead of 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified the dials would spell out 'Super Precision' or 'Precision' below the hands.

The timepiece is fitted with an Automatic, 26 jewels, impressively accurate caliber 1530 Movement
On ref 5500 launch, it was driven by Cal 1530 - still regarded by many watchmakers as one of the best calibers Rolex has ever produced.
However, by 1965 the brand was slowly switching to less advanced Cal 1520.
Movement is signed & numbered
Perfectly proportioned rounded, slightly Tonneau-Shaped Case, performed in Stainless Steel, measuring 34mm,
Case is bearing a number 893XXX between lugs, which refers to year 1963.
Screw down Caseback, inside back date coded 1/63, no 1002 ?
Signed screw down Crown, that winds & sets smoothly
Greatly presented matte black Acrylic Explorer Dial, with Arabic 3-6-9 layout &
Baton Numerals & distinctive triangular index at 12, hands & minute track on its edge have developed a charming patina & are of beige colour,
Hours are tracking by Mercedes hand, minutes - by sword shaped hand, while the seconds are counted with a thin central hand.
Signed "Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer, Precision" - being vintage piece the dial of the watch can bear either "Precision" or "Super Precision", regardless of which caliber it has.
Dial features a great balance of text & colour, surrounded by smooth bezel
Attached to a sturdy Stainless Steel Rolex Oyster Bracelet with signed clasp & numbered 557 on end links.
