England, 20th century. Oil on canvas by Alfred H. Bennett who remained an active painter from 1861 to 1916. This piece was from quite early in his career, as it is dated 1863. The painting depicts three children resting near a weathered cottage under a bright blue sky. Adorned with a golden frame, which appears original due to the condition of the stretchers.

Overall good condition. Craquelure throughout and the frame is cracked in many areas, as well as missing pieces. 23.5' L x 19.0' H; sight is 15.0" L x 12.0" H.

From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
