香筒一對青白玉質，溫潤細膩，光澤瑩潤。器由三部分组成，圓柱形體中空，天地配碧玉蓋座，蓋作圓亭式，座鏤雕蝙蝠一周，工藝繁巧。中間為白玉圓筒，上下口沿均飾幾何紋邊框。器壁融合鏤雕、浮雕、圓雕、打窪等多種工藝，通景式雕琢高士自娛悠閒場景。畫面流雲映帶，蒼松翠柏相間，虯枝從旁斜出，亭台坐落，講求遠近層次安排。遠處層巒疊嶂中雕欄掩映，樓閣隱現，意境幽遠；近景密樹茂林間，二位慈眉老者衣袂當風，悠然暢遊於秀麗庭園。整體技藝超群，以刀代筆，白玉為絹，紋飾布局自然，層次豐富，將人物姿態、園林氣韻生動體現，令人有心曠神怡之感。清宮舊藏，北京故宮博物院庋藏清〈青玉群壽圖香筒一對〉，與本對香筒在紋飾、雕工及天地配碧玉蓋座等多方面相似，為當時精湛工藝之展現，可資參考。

香筒主要作薰香淨化空氣之用，可直接將特製的香料或香花放入筒內，香氣從筒壁、筒蓋的氣孔中溢出，或可放置豎直薰燒線香，亦稱「香籠」或「香亭」。唐代李賀曾以香筒入詩，作「曉奩妝秀靨，夜帳減香筒」，及韋應物《效何水部》：「玉宇含清露，香籠散輕煙。」燃香於筒內，煙霧氤氳中，或揮筆，或閱籍，或沉思，其樂無窮；閨閣女子盛花或香料於其中，芬芳氣味通過筒壁縷縷散發，使閨閣香暖素淨。又宋代詩人陸游在《假中閉戶終日偶得絕句》：「官身常欠讀書債，祿米不供沽酒資。剩喜今朝寂無事，焚香閑看玉溪詩。」道盡書齋中焚香靜讀之樂。

香筒出現於唐宋，流行於明清，此時線香的盛行也推動筒式熏香的應用。清宮留存實物中有一類香筒，材質多以金屬為主，兼有玉或其他材質，基本為圓柱形，亭式上蓋。常為成對使用，使用時香筒內燃香料，香氣由中間孔隙釋放。清宮檔案記載，香筒一般也放置於寶座兩側，與甪端等動物形熏香一同使用，「乾隆七年二月二十六日，柏唐阿常安來說太監高玉交單簷龍掛香筒一對，圓樓香筒三對，傳旨：著交佛保，著將單簷龍掛香筒改作重簷收拾見新，其圓樓香筒亦收拾見新，在按尺寸配做甪端四對。」從記載來看，不論是單簷還是重簷，形制相類，而按尺寸配做甪端，則反映當時的實際使用情況。現存乾清宮內寶座兩邊的陳設佳器，可略窺清時香具豐富奢華，並成為皇室貴族及文人雅士日常的重要場景。

拍場相似之作可見北京東正2011年11月 17日，編號387，清乾隆〈白玉雕溪山高隱圖香筒一對〉，其形式、主題與本品相似，可資參考。本對香筒結構嚴謹，以園林中悠閒高士生活為創作主題，茂密松柏相襯，表現出悠然自得的閒適意境，隱約流露文人不聞世事的理想追求。整體布局景物如畫，建構出充滿想像力的豐富空間意象。其鏤刻之處藏於林間石隙，薰香時，香靄自松林深處緩緩溢出，靈動幽謐，極富雅趣，實為收藏陳設的難得精品。
