Not all WWII posters were created by the US Government. This poster, part of a highly popular campaign, was created by Stetson Hats and warned of the dangers of sharing sensitive information about troop movements. Here, a soldier mourns a lost comrade somewhere in the Pacific. The "Keep it Under Your Stetson" campaign of posters led the phrase to be just as popular a catchphrase as "Loose Lips Sink Ships" during WWII in America. Robert Riggs (1896-1970) was an American illustrator and painter. Aside from his war effort posters, Riggs is most well known for his paintings of boxing and circus scenes. Stetson was founded in 1865 by John B. Stetson in Philadelphia, after he returned from a trip out West and was not able to find a suitable hat for the expedition. He is known as the inventor of the cowboy hat, and the company continues to make them to this day (Stetson has been bought and sold several times since its founding).
