Central Asia, Pakistan / India, Indus Valley, Charsadda, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A lovely pottery figure of a female deity or mother goddess heavily adorned with applied and incised jewelry and headdress. Exhibiting the frontal and symmetrical posture characteristic of a hand-modelled, archaic fertility figure, the ancient deity presents applied, slit-pellet eyes, a flattened body, and short, outspread arms. The combined effect of the flat shape and high relief ornamentation, which consists of applied incised florets and leaves, incised jeweler and applied costume, is one of geometricized order and form. Size: 2.1" W x 2.5" H (5.3 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece with losses to headdress and coiffure. Some nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. Nice remaining detail and light earthen deposits in recessed areas. Adhered to metal pole, but pole is removable from stand.
